Press Release

Am I Bovvered?

Dear Madras Pupils,

Please ask your parents “Are you bovvered” about the appalling state of Madras College and what are they doing to get you a new school?

As targets are the latest educational fad we suggest that you set your parents some and periodically monitor how well they are performing against these targets. Below are some suggestions for actions that your parents could be taking to help secure you a decent school, hopefully before your children start at Madras College.

1. Attend all School Board meetings, there are six a year and the next one is on Tuesday 6 February at 7:00pm in the library at the South Street site. School Board meetings are public meetings and all are welcome to attend as observers or to raise items for discussion.

2. Write to your local Councillor.

3. Write to the Head of Education at Fife Council.

4. Write to all the members of Fife Council’s Children’s Services Committee (CSC).

5. Write to Iain Smith our local MSP (Iain is the Convener of the Education Committee and the Lib Dem spokesman for education in the Scottish Parliament. In 2003 Iain Smith’s election policy statement said: “This time my priority for North East Fife is a new secondary school for North Fife.” Iain are we closer to a new secondary school in North Fife and what are you doing about the Madras split-site problem?)

6. Write to Hugh Henry MSP, Education Minister in the Scottish Executive.

7. Attend every CSC meeting until a new Madras is built, The next meeting is on 8 March at 10:00am at Fife House, Glenrothes.

8. Stand as a local Councillor in the May 2007 election on a single-issue ticket – rebuild Madras within four years.

9. Stand as a MSP in the May 2007 election on a single-issue ticket – rebuild Madras within four years.

Get your parents to make realistic commitments to these targets and then monitor closely how well they do against them. But, don’t forget until they have provided you with a new school they are underachieving and you should write “try harder” on their report cards.

We fully support Mr Matheson and the School Board and our aim is to try and get the Madras split-site problem resolved within four years. Contact details for all the people mentioned above can be found at www.madrascollege.blogspot.com
