A very lively meeting, attended by 60 plus parents, took place last month at Kilrymont. A good cross section of views were aired in the presence of Fife Council representatives, school staff including the present Rector, Mr Matheson, and the incoming Rector, Mr Ian Jones.
Professor McKeirnan summarised the University proposal and Mr Colin Ackland of the council stated he was aware a meeting had taken place to discuss this. He stated that catchments review was underway but awaiting the return of the Structure Plan would be a factor. Interestingly, he believes that an 1800 pupil replacement school could be managed if required but no money was available for rebuild unless a PPP round was announced. A TBH school was discussed but did not engender a ground swell of support. In fact, one parent said she felt the TBH issue was “muddying the waters” and that a TBH school would hold no advantage for Bell Baxter.( Any comments?)
Mr Matheson said that pupils do develop in large schools .Mr Jones said that small schools could lack scope of curriculum and classes and felt that 900-ish pupil’s minimum was required to offer a balance.
We would welcome your comments on the above points.
